Statement from Time Warner Cable on DNS issues in SoCal, National Regions 3.03.09
As of Tuesday, March 3rd, there have been no DNS attacks for four days. Attacks have typically occured Monday through Thursday nights during Internet "prime time," roughly 7 - 11 pm West Coast time.
We have identified several hundred customers whose machines have been used to perpetrate this attack. Their access to our network was temporarily suspended to prevent future attacks. All infected computers have been re – enabled and we are proactively crediting these specific accounts.
Some infected customers have been gracious enough to allow us to visit their homes and study their computers in their native environment. Our inspections didn't find any applications running in the background, leading us to believe that the IPs have been hijacked and spoofed, leaving the actual machines untouched.
We've installed state of the art hardware and software, and are continuing to monitor this situation very, very closely and make adjustments as necessary.
These updates may seem vague, and they are -- intentionally so. We're trying to balance a need for greater transparency with our customers against the inherent security risks in dribbling out too much information about our strategy. Pretty much the last thing we want to do is give the wrong people enough information to take a crack at us again.
Again, we apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience during a time that has been frustrating to all of us.
